The Agreement of 1869

Archive Context: The following is a reconstruction of "The Agreement" referenced in Margaret Blackthorn's annotations and various family documents. The original document was reportedly destroyed by fire in 1887, but copies of the essential terms were preserved in Sir William Blackthorn's private journal. This reconstruction is based on Margaret Blackthorn's transcription from family records, found among her personal effects in 1994.

Note: Margaret's transcription indicates portions were already illegible or deliberately obscured in the source material.

COVENANT AND AGREEMENT

Made this Twenty-First day of March in the Year of Our Lord Eighteen Hundred and Sixty-Nine, between Sir William Blackthorn of Blackthorn Manor, Northumberland, Party of the First Part, and Those Who Watch From Beyond the Threshold, Party of the Second Part.

WHEREAS the Party of the First Part, through excavation of the ancient site upon his property, has breached the barrier between the Realm of Man and the ████████████████████;

AND WHEREAS the Party of the Second Part, Seven in Number and Ancient in Days, have manifested partially into the Realm of Man through the breach so created;

AND WHEREAS complete manifestation of the Party of the Second Part would result in ████████████████████████████████████████;

NOW THEREFORE the Parties agree as follows:

I. The Party of the First Part shall construct and maintain an Interface—a space existing partially in both Realms—wherein the Party of the Second Part may dwell without complete manifestation into the Realm of Man.

II. The Party of the First Part, and his descendants in perpetuity, shall maintain the apparatus necessary to stabilize the Interface, performing such rituals and observances as are detailed in the Appendix hereto.

III. The Party of the First Part shall not document, depict, or otherwise record the presence or appearance of the Party of the Second Part. Such documentation strengthens the connection between Realms and risks complete manifestation.

IV. The Party of the Second Part shall remain within the Interface and shall not fully manifest in the Realm of Man, except as permitted under Clause VII.

V. The Party of the Second Part may observe the Realm of Man through the Interface but shall not directly communicate with humans other than the designated Keeper of the Agreement.

VI. Every seven years, the current Keeper shall enter the Interface and renew the binding through blood offering freely given. Failure to perform this renewal shall void the Agreement.

VII. Should any human enter the Interface without permission, or document the Party of the Second Part in violation of Clause III, such person becomes forfeit to the Party of the Second Part. This shall not constitute breach of the Agreement.

VIII. ████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████████

IX. This Agreement shall bind the Party of the First Part and all his descendants until ████████████████████, at which time ████████████████████████████████████████.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, the Parties have set their marks below:

The seven-year renewal cycle explains the recurring dates in family records. Clause VII explains the disappearances documented in the archive. The final renewal was due in 1996, two years after Margaret Blackthorn's death. -SW, May 2024
